Opening Smudge

Advent Wreath Lighting by Sarah, Peter & Hannah Zacher

Reader: “In that region there were shepherds living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then an angel from heaven stood before them, and the glory of the divine shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, ‘Do not be afraid; for see–I am bringing you good news of great joy for all the people.'”

Reader: Today we remember the shepherds, workers for the common good, steadfast watchers isolated and alone, far from the warmth of home, doing the job no one wants. And yet God saw them, God valued them, and God declared the greatest news of all to them alone.

People: Today we give thanks for the shepherds among us, back-breaking laborers on whom our economy stands, those we overlook or rarely see, yet rely on for our very survival, the ones who have much to teach us about watching for God in the darkness.

Reader: On this second Sunday in Advent, we light the second candle as a symbol of the shepherds, agents of the gospel and redeemers of the world. (Light two purple candles.)

Lao Tzu # 12 Stephen Mitchell followed by 5 minutes of silence
Colors blind the eye. Sounds deafen the ear. Flavors numb the taste. Thoughts weaken the mind. Desires wither the heart. The Master observes the world but trusts the inner vision. We allow things to come and go. The heart is open as the sky.

Scripture Reading Mark 1:1-8 by Beth Richards

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.  As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,'”
John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Why we do the Creation dance 3 times:

With a big production that takes a lot of rehearsal, like the Creation dance performance, often we only get to present it once.  Then all the dancers have gone their separate ways and it would be hard to get them all together again for another performance.  I feel that dance can be treated like a beloved hymn.  We revisit it from time to time.  Just because we have heard “Appalachian Spring” once doesn’t mean we can’t understand or enjoy more of it a second or third time.

The first time many of us see a dance, we are simply getting used to the new medium.  The second time we may recognize some of the movements.  It takes a third time, I think, before we might be able to give some meaning to those movements.  Let us know what meanings you are seeing in the movements of our Creation dance.   Thanks! Janet Skidmore
