Walker Sunday School is a program open to any and all children over the age of 3. It runs from on Sundays from 11 am to noon. We are an inclusive, open Sunday school and throughout the hour we usually do a variety of activities. These activities range from reading stories and doing arts and crafts, to playing games and various different exercises.

The curriculum we use is called A Joyful Path, a children’s Sunday school curriculum put out by a company called Progressive Christianity. It’s a truly wonderful curriculum in my opinion and encourages kids to ask questions and be curious, go within and find their own inner guidance and wisdom, be creative, share their gifts and continue learning about their passions, find compassion for all beings and to be inclusive and tolerant and to find the divine in all. It does this my combining different exercises and thought provoking questions for the kids to answer as well as incorporating stories and legends from various world religions as well as Christianity.

A typical hour in Sunday school usually starts by going around and introducing ourselves, saying names and ages as well as a fun fact about yourself. Then we usually discuss a topic related to the story we’ll read later. I encourage the children to share personal experiences and feelings related to what we are talking about that day but I try not to pressure if they don’t feel comfortable talking in the group.

We then continue by reading a story from our curriculum or occasionally a story from an outside source, and we usually finish off the day by either doing at art project that’s related to the theme of the day or by going upstairs to our dining hall and playing a game, such as tag. This will differ slightly week to week depending on what we are talking about but this would be a typical day in Walker Sunday School.

Same as our Walker’s mission statement, Walker Sunday School’s goal is to nurture spirituality, build caring community and work courageously for peace with justice and mercy.

Hope to see you there!
