Walker Community United Methodist Church

Our mission is to nurture spirituality, build caring community & work courageously for peace with justice and mercy.

 Hello Walkerites, Friends & Visitors

Here are the announcements.

If you are bringing treats containing chocolate, whether homemade or bought, please be aware of our Peace with Justice commitment to boycott 95% of the chocolate sold (all major brand names, most bakery items) because it is literally produced by child slaves. Please use Fair Trade certified chocolate and cocoa in your baking and label it as you would gluten free or other factors.

Sunday Celebration – Worship Collaboration Walker Church + New City Church! On Sunday, April 22, we will be joining our housemates New City Church upstairs in the dining hall. There will be food before the service provided by New City and coffee and treats after provided by us. We will incorporate some elements of our celebration, but their musicians will be “onstage” for most of it – so NO band nor songbooks this Sunday. However, we will have our four directions opening, our five minute meditation, poetry read by Roberta Cullen, Special Performance from Howard Kranz, and the circle with Amazing Grace at the end. This will be a great chance to get to know one of our sister congregations, so we hope you can be there. Normal service will resume next week.

KFAI Live Broadcast: Tues, May 1, 10:00 am. On May 1st, 1978, after five years of legal entanglements and FCC challenges, KFAI-FM went live. The humble 10-watt station, run by the non-profit Fresh Air, Inc. and staffed by a group of 100 on and off-air volunteers, began its life in the belfry of the Walker Community Church and served a small broadcast area in the Powderhorn neighborhood. To celebrate its 40th birthday, KFAI will broadcast live from the Walker theatre/sanctuary.

Mutual Aid Disaster Relief – Part I – Protectors vs. Profiteers: Wed, May 2, 6:00 – 8:00 pm. Co-sponsored by Northland Health Collective, Mutual Aid Disaster Relief (MADRelief) is starting a grassroots training campaign, and they are coming this way! With an innovative curriculum that shows how natural storms turn into unnatural disasters through dangerous new forms of disaster capitalism and how everyday people are using principles of “Solidarity, Not Charity” to engage in DIY disaster recovery, a 2-day workshop will include both an easy introduction accessible to the general public (part I), and a deeper participatory training for those who are ready to get involved (part II, see below.)

Mutual Aid Disaster Relief – Part II – Giving our best, ready for the worst: Fri, May 4, 1:00 – 6:00 pm. This is the more in-depth, participatory training. Both MADR programs are free and open to all.
