Reading:  If Hope Was a Woman by Hawona Sullivan Jensen

If hope was a woman she would not be thin.

She would be thick from all the possibilities that bloomed within.

There would be a gap between her front teeth – a large one – not small,

just the right size for her nature to slip up on us all.

She would have full lips for speaking the truth and her hair

no matter what style she chose to wear it in– would always be natural.

If hope was a woman she might be pregnant, but she might be not.

Whatever state of motherhood you found her in

you would know that she had birthed herself a nation and made it great.

And if you ask her things like “When? or Where? or How?”

You might find it difficult to pin her down.

But if you ask her to embrace you, she would drop everything she was doing

and hold you like you have never been held before.

All of this would be … if hope was a woman.

And you know what? She is.
